    About Catherine...

Edinburgh franchise owner and class teacher.

When we joined our first Stage 1 Sing and Sign class in 2011, I had no idea how important baby signing would become for us. My son who was 8 months old at the time, loved the music and the social feel to the classes and I learned loads of new songs and signs. Classes were fun but it wasn't until my son was around 13 months old and began signing back to me that I realised the true value of what we had been learning. It was so wonderful being able to have little conversations with him and of course there were huge practical benefits too as we were all able to make ourselves better understood.

I love teaching baby signing and being able to share my passion for Sing and Sign with new families in Edinburgh. I am very lucky to be a small part of such an exciting time in these families lives. I really hope you feel inspired to come along, find out more about Sing and Sign and try baby signing in your family.

    Catherine Rennie.

    About Hazel...

Class teacher at Inch House (Mondays) and Marchmont (Wednesdays)

Hazel is a passionate advocate for baby signing with a huge depth of knowledge and years of experience! Alongside that, her warm, friendly teaching means her classes are truly welcoming and nurturing.

After 15 years working backstage in theatre and two children Hazel is entering her second year as a Sing and Sign teacher. She first attended Sing and Sign classes in London with her elder son Owen and then Catherine’s classes in Edinburgh with her younger son Liam. Hazel was really delighted when Catherine gave her the opportunity to share the joy that she and her family have found in Sing and Sign with other Edinburgh Mums, Dads, Grandparents and childminders.

In addition to Hazel’s experience as a Sing & Sign parent and teacher Hazel has foundation level training in Signalong which is the keyword signing system used by Edinburgh schools and she also has hands on experience of the Hanen ‘It takes two to talk’ programme.

    About the classes in Edinburgh...

Sing and Sign classes follow a ten-week curriculum covering all the signs you need to know for day to day life with your baby or toddler. There are three different age-appropriate stages available - for more information on the different Stages and course costs see the "more info" tab above. Click HERE to view timetable, to join a waiting list or book a space. All classes are taught by myself or the lovely Hazel who joins me as a class teacher bringing an amazing wealth and experience of baby signing.

    What classes are available?

for babies from 2 months to around 7 months old. – A lovely gentle class for the youngest age group aiming to build the foundations for good communication. The class is relaxed, gives you lots of time face to face with your wee one, plenty of cuddle time and is the perfect place to begin your baby signing journey

    ‘Stage 1’

for babies from 6 months to around 18 months – Covering lots of different themes relating to your babies world, we use songs, rhymes, instruments, toys and props in a fun, relaxed class. Babies love the fun and the music while adults effortlessly learn all the signs they need for day-to-day life with their baby.

    ‘Stage 2’

for toddlers from around 14 months to 2 years and beyond! – This class covers themes such as colours, phonics, manners, even using the potty! Designed with inquisitive and energetic toddlers in mind.

     When and where?

The Sing and Sign programme follows a ten-week curriculum and I teach three terms throughout the year roughly following the school terms.

    Spring term begins in January

    Summer term begins late April

    Autumn term begins early September

Classes are currently running on Monday mornings in Leith, Monday afternoons in Liberton, Wednesdays in Marchmont, Thursdays in Portobello, Fridays in Marchmont and Saturdays in Stockbridge

     How Much?

Stage 1/Stage 2: Each 10-week term costs £75 per family

'Babes': Either one 8-week block or two 5-week blocks of Babes per term. The two 5-week blocks are slightly different and so parents can choose to do both blocks or just one if they prefer. (Please note that the next opportunity to join a Stage 1 class will usually be at the start of the following term.)

8-week block costs £54 and a 5-week block costs £38. This fee includes your course materials (songbook with vocab and music plus weekly supporting e-mails.) If you return for a second or third block you can make use of a Babes rebooking discount meaning subsequent 5-week blocks cost £26, 8-week blocks cost £42. Babes classes can be joined at any point throughout the term (subject to space). In this situation a shorter payment block will be arranged. Please contact to arrange.

    Anything else?

I limit the number of families per class to around 11 depending on the room. This keeps classes small, friendly and relaxed but it does mean places are limited so book early!

Get in touch if you have any further questions or you'd like to be added to the waiting list for any future classes.
