My name is Zsuzsa and I'm running Sing and Sign baby signing classes in Midlothian.

I’m a mom of two boys, Mark who is 5 years old and Felix who will be 2 this summer. They keep me super busy!

Our baby signing journey started with Mark when he was just a few months old and we borrowed the Sing and Sign DVDs from a friend. We got hooked straight away and when he was around 9 month old we started to attend our local baby signing class.

We’ve already discovered the benefits of baby signing before Mark was born, when a friend attended Sing and Sign classes with her little girl and my husband and I decided that we’d go down the same route as them, because it was so amazing seeing them communicate with their little one! I recall their mealtimes and how smooth they were with her daughter signing food, drink, milk and more and it was also a joy to watch them reading a book whilst signing along.

When we started signing with Mark he soon picked up the signs and started to sign back to us! His first signs were eat, milk, more and finished which he used in many contexts such as when he wanted to get out of a swing or his high chair. He soon added thank you and some of the animal signs. Not only did he use sign language with me and his dad (who was also very keen to join the wonderful world of signing), but he also signed with friends and our family. It was fantastic to see how everyone got involved and quickly picked up signs so they could communicate with Mark!

When Mark was around 2 years old we moved back to Scotland from England and Sing and Sign Midlothian was born. When our second baby was born it was no question that we will teach him baby signing. Felix's first sign was milk just around 6 month followed by more and finish at 7 months. And there is no stopping since. At just over 1 year he knew around 50 signs and used them on a daily basis to communicate with us. The number of signs have doubled since and still growing. Reading a book to a toddler has never been more fun! Can you imagine your little one telling you what he sees in his book? It's fantastic! We are still amazed and very proud of each sign!

Come and join me on this wonderful journey and experience the joy of baby signing! I promise you will never look back!

    The Sing and Sign way

Sing and Sign classes encourage families to two way communication. They teach baby signing through catchy music, songs, well known nursery rhymes and lots of fun interaction with musical instruments, props and Jessie Cat who is our mascot.

You will soon start using signs to reduce frustration and encourage early communication with your baby. Once you get into it you will see how easy it is and oh so rewarding! I promise, you will never look back!

Babies naturally use gestures and sounds to communicate with their parents from an early stage. You might already recognise some of them, such as pointing, shaking their head, clapping hands and waving hello or bye-bye. These are all natural first signs. Introducing extra gestures to your baby such as milk, more, nappy change and tired can help your baby to communicate even more with you before they start to speak. This will reduce frustration and is wonderfully rewarding and fantastic fun for both parent and baby.

At class we sing and sign about what goes on in a baby’s world. Each week we cover a different topic such as eating, bath time and nappy changes, going out to play, hiding games, bedtime and lots more. There is a high standard of educational content but classes are delivered in a relaxing, enjoyable and unpressured way for you and your baby to learn.

There is no pressure to keep your babies still; they can enjoy the songs, music and making friends whilst you learn the signs. We sing and sign for around 40 minutes then there is time for play whilst parents can enjoy a drink and chat.

    BOOK YOUR CLASS NOW!

    There are three different classes

Sing and Sign Babes is for babies aged from about 6 weeks to 6 months and is a gentle introduction to Sing and Sign for the littlest babies and their parents. You will learn some basic signs, lots of fun songs and games that you can play with your baby at home as well and you will spend all this time with other lovely, like-minded parents. This course can be joined at anytime during the term. In this case I will arrange for a shorter payment block for you. Please get in touch!

Stage 1 is for babies aged from about 6 months to around 18 months and teaches the core curriculum of signs so parents, carers and babies gain a wide range of vocabulary to help ease frustration and boost communication. No previous signing experience is required, but this is a great progress from our babes class if you attended one before.

Stage 2 is for those who have completed at least one term of Stage 1 class and are 14 months plus. We build on the core signs learned in Stage 1 and introduce more complicated signing and themes suitable for active toddlers. This includes a great potty song for those about to start potty training. We also sign about colours, the weather, learn how to finger sign the alphabet and start phonics sounds too!

    Timings and Venues

Classes currently run in Midlothian. There are three 10 week terms a year starting in January, April and September. Classes run for around 1 hour including a bit of social time at the end for parents and babies.

Babes classes run as a 10 week term and you can join anytime during the course. In this case, please get in touch so I can arrange a shorter payment plan for you.

The cost of a Stage 1 or Stage 2 10 week course is £78. I will provide teas and coffees after class while your little one plays with their friends and you chat with the other parents. An excellent opportunity for you and your little one to socialise and make new friends.

Since January 2020 I am also including the basic level of our wonderful Jessie Cat Club membership for every family in Stage 1. This helps you to extend your learning beyond class.

Currently I teach in Dalkeith Country Park,  Bright Sparks in Bonnyrigg and The Link in Loanhead.

To keep classes friendly and relaxed, I limit the number of families per class.

Classes are very popular and early booking is advised to secure your place.

If you have any questions, please get in touch via the enquiry form, email or phone. Also, I am on Facebook and INSTAGRAM as Sing and Sign Midlothian. Don’t forget to follow me!
