Hi there, my name is Rachel and I am the Sing and Sign baby signing teacher for the Wirral, Merseyside.
A bit about me..... I have British Sign Language and Social Work qualifications, and my professional background is in working with children and families and people with disabilities in the UK and overseas. I have used signing and makaton a lot in my career, but my most recent sign language experience has been gained signing with our daughter Ruby who is now 4 years old and our one year old son Tommy.
Ruby and I started baby signing when she was around 6 months old. Although we both loved going to classes, I must admit to being a bit sceptical about whether it would actually work! But just as I was thinking about giving up Ruby amazed me by signing back, first 'bird', then 'milk' and 'more', at around 10 months of age! My heart melted, I couldn't believe what I was seeing! Ruby and I are now busily teaching Tommy to sign. He too began signing back at ten months and is a great fan of the 'milk' and 'where?' signs. Signing is a wonderful tool for developing their bond as brother and sister. All the family loves baby signing as it is so very easy and so much fun. Nothing beats watching your pre-verbal infant child clearly communicating with you using their hands!
Here is Ruby at 10 months of age signing for 'more' and at 15 months asking for some 'toast'!

We are now taking bookings for Autumn Term 2010 which starts on Thursday 23 September in Heswall. The Sing and Sign programme is a structured course, and the very best time to join us is right at the start of a new term. Please see the class details below and get in touch if you would like to join us and I will send you details of free trial sessions (depending on availability) and a booking form.
Parents have consistently voted our classes as their favourite, and we are very proud to have won awards for 'Best Toddler Development Activity', 'Best Activity for Under 2s' and 'Best Baby Signing Class'!!!!! As a result our classes fill up quickly.
If you are interested in joining us please get in touch as soon as possible to avoid disappointment as class numbers are strictly limited to a maximum of 12 to preserve the quality of the class and places are allocated on a first come first served basis. The emphasis on our classes is on fun and enjoyment in a relaxed and lively atmosphere. There is no pressure on your baby to sit still if they want to move around, as babies get a tremendous amount out of the classes from wherever they are in the room. The main thing is for you to relax, enjoy the class and learn some useful signs which will motivate your baby to sign back and encourage speech development.
Which class is best for us? Stage One beginners classes are suitable for babies from 6 months of age. Babies usually complete two terms (sometimes three terms) of the 'equal but different' Stage One classes before moving on to Stage Two which also has two 'equal but different' terms of teaching. There are exceptions to this for babies who are older when they start attending(18 months plus).
If your baby is too young for this term (or if you are expecting) why not join the priority waiting list for next term (starting January 2011) or the one after (starting April 2011).
When and Where? The classes and places still on offer next term are as follows (place availability as of 10 August 2010):
