UPPER NORWOOD LIBRARY HUB at 11.00 a.m. STAGE 1 (6 alternate weeks only, commencing 29th APRIL 2017)

Many of my parents comment that they would love their partner to be able to experience a Sing and Sign class, but that work commitments make it impossible.

I know how much babies gain from having as many people signing with them as possible  - and I know that attending a Sing and Sign class is the single most encouraging thing for a working-on-weekdays-parent to do  in order to get going with babysigning.  I am running Saturday classes (alternate Saturdays) at Upper Norwood Library Hub.  Very exciting!

Not sure which "stage" to book?  Click on the "More Info" tab above.  There you will also find lots more information about cost etc.

Please go to the venues and more info pages (tabs at the top of this page) to find out exact locations / dates / prices etc.

Classes on all Stages are limited to 11 places (10 at some venues) but need at least 7 participants to run.  In the unlikely event of a class not having sufficient numbers you will be offered an alternative class or a full refund. It is far more likely that classes will book up very quickly, so if you are new to Sing and Sign, I'd recommend that you book on the January 2017 Term now (the link is at the top of this page).

Hope to see you and your little one(s) at a Sing and Sign class soon.
As I'm often teaching during the day and looking after my own children in the evenings / at weekends, it may take me a while to get back to any enquiry.  Therefore, if you want to know which classes have spaces, please follow the link at the top of the page to the online booking system to see for yourself.
Also, by clicking on the tabs at the top of the page you can answer most questions about venues / costs etc.  If your question remains unanswered, please don't hesitate to get in touch and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

I am Trish Cummings -  a passionate enthusiast in delivering Sing and Sign classes in this area for over 12 years!

it is an absolute privilege to share these early communication tools with you and I love hearing about "my" babies' first signs and words. It's the most  rewarding occupation in the world, in fact! (Aside from being a parent, too).

We have huge amounts of fun in our classes - and our 10 or 11 week terms enable me to develop genuine, lasting relationships with you and your baby, focusing on helping you to build the early framework for effective communication at home.

Classes are aimed at teaching babysigning in an entertaining and illuminating way to families who are seriously interested in improving the two-way communication between parent and child and who are committed to getting the most from our award-winning, enjoyable and stimulating course of classes. I absolutely love introducing families to the delights and rewards of signing with their babies and I am committed to making your class experience your favourite time of the week :) Recent feedback from families reflects this - thank you very much indeed to everyone who has commented so favourably on their classes with me.

If you are seeking a music entertainment class once a week, then my classes are not for you! To get the most out of our classes requires your commitment at home to using the signs at home with your baby. If you are committed to doing this and to attending every class possible (I offer free catch up classes where space permits, should you miss a class), then baby signing IS for you and I am excited about the prospect of introducing you to this most enjoyable and beneficial learning experience.

Which Stage Class should I Attend?

We have 3 different "stages" of Sing and Sign which have been developed specifically for your baby's developmental stages.
Sing and Sign Babes classes are for 2 to 5 month olds with their parent / carer.  This gentle class explores themes such as eye contact, gesture and anticipation together with lots of cuddles, tickles and some simple signs.  All building the framework for good communication and brought to you using our magic ingredient - music!

Sing and Sign Stage 1 is ideal for babies from 6 months old up to around 14 months old and their parent / carer.  Themes include basic signs, nappies & bath time, emotions & bedtime.  You'll learn over 100 signs related to your routines and also the sort of things your baby may be interested in, such as animals and vehicles.
It is quite a big step from Stage 1 to Stage 2, so many people come to Stage 1 for two terms before attending Stage 2.
However, this is also dependent on your baby's age.
Sing and Sign Stage 2 is great when your little one is 14+ months, moving about and probably starting to talk (although every baby is different, so there's no hard and fast rule!) as it is more active and interactive.  Themes include weather, opposites, colours and the phonetic alphabet, together with simple counting songs, turn taking, sharing and of course, lots of fun!

Some people don't hear about Sing and Sign until their little ones are 14+ months old and then wonder if it too late to start. Not at all!  It may be more appropriate to come straight to a Stage 2 class, but if you e-mail me we can have a chat about your individual circumstances.

How Long Do Classes Run For?
10/11 week Babes classes run for about 30 minutes  - they are very relaxed. DO come if your baby is asleep - you will still be able to learn lots to take home and use with your baby.

10/11 week Stage 1 and 2 classes run for about 45 minutes (sometimes longer depending on the size of the group).

How Many People Attend Sing and Sign Classes?
Class sizes are limited to 11 or 12 babies (fewer at some venues) with their parent/carer.  Space can be tight so, apart from on special occasions (e.g. Granny coming to stay for the week), we have to limit places to one adult per child.

I Have Twins / Triplets - How Many Places Do I Pay For?
Twins/Triplets are welcome and only pay for one place if there is only one adult.  If you bring Dad / Granny or another adult helper each week, you will need to book 2 places.

I Have An Older Child - Can They Come Too?
Pre-school aged siblings are welcome at Stage 1 & 2 at no extra cost (assuming one adult, as with twins).Older siblings always enjoy the singing and we involve them as much as possible, although we do ask parents / carers to be considerate of the fact that the classes are not aimed at the older child and that they are responsible for not allowing them to run about or dominate the group.

Please ask when you book if you there is space in your chosen class to accommodate an older siblings, as it can limit the number of places I have available.

Siblings under the age of 3 are NOT permitted to attend Babes classes as the babies are so tiny.  If this causes you a problem, let me know and we can have a chat about your individual circumstances.

If you are bringing a friend's child as well as your own or are a Childminder bringing more than one child, please contact me to discuss your individual situation.
If you are "home-schooling" and have a school-aged child attending the class, I charge an extra £10 per school-aged c
    How Much Does It Cost?
Babes classes cost £80 for the 10-week course (PLUS £13 for the Jessie Cat Songbook, which also has free CDs)
Stage 1 & 2 classes run for 10 weeks and cost £90.00 for the course (PLUS £15 for the Sing and Sign Membership basic package (1 year online subscription - NB THIS IS A SPECIAL PRICE FOR SING AND SIGN CLASS MEMBERS ONLY.  Alternatively, you may choose Sing and Sign DVD).  If you are repeating a stage then this additional cost does not apply.

We have so many classes running across the Borough of Southwark each week that I hope if you find you can't make a particular day, I can find you a space on an alternative class.  However, I do understand that circumstances change so if for any reason you find you are unable to come along at all, please let me know ASAP so I can open the place up to someone else and offer you a refund.  Please note, refunds are NOT available for missed classes, for any reason, nor are reductions in fees for your planned absence. If you aren't able to attend many of the classes, then please consider waiting to book until April or September 2017..

I Am On Holiday For A Couple Of The Classes.  Do I Still Have To Pay The Full Amount?
In a word, yes!  This is a local, small business that supports a family, despite Sing and Sign being a nationally known and leading brand.  We commit to you and we ask you to commit to us.

Sing and Sign classes operate as a course, not a drop-in and your place is guaranteed each week.  Many people miss one or two weeks because of illness / holidays etc. and they soon catch up as our classes are purposefully repetitive to help you remember the songs and the signs (and babies love routine too).  We also send you handouts to complement the classes.
    Can I Attend A Taster?
I used to run free taster sessions, but unfortunately I  have had many people come along for the freebie with absolutely no intention of signing up for classes, and this has excluded other genuine enquirers from attending a free session.
I have therefore replaced my free taster sessions with Introductory Sessions, which cost £5 and require advance booking.  If you attend an Introductory Session then you may claim back the cost of that session when you book and pay AT THE INTRODUCTORY SESSION.  The cost of the Introductory Session is not recoverable after you leave the session.

One of the lovely things about Sing and Sign is that we keep the class sizes small and you see the same people each week. Having someone come for one week during the term would change the dynamic of the group and also wouldn't be appropriate as it is a course which builds each week, not a drop-in.  For those reasons, we don't allow people to drop in for a "taster" during term time.

The term lasts for 10 or 11 weeks, ie you attend 10/11 classes, once per week!  You are welcome to book into two classes, for example, if your partner or other family member also wishes to attend classes with your baby, on a separate day from you.

  • Nurseries

Nurseries: how many parents have overlooked you because you don't sign with the children in your setting?

Increasingly I'm approached by parents who are returning to work, seeking advice on which local nurseries use signing with their children.

Babysigning is an invaluable tool to use with children, particulaly in multilingual communities, and it offers many benefits and rewards, for children and staff alike.

Here are some local nurseries who have already received (and greatly enjoyed) my Sing and Sign Nursery Affiliation Programme training sessions:

Arc Nursery, 39 Crosby Row, Borough SE1

Kiddi Caru International Nursery, Empress Approach, Earl's Court, SW6

Kiddi Caru Streatham Nursery, Streatham High Road, Streatham, SW16

Playhouse Montessori Nursery, 1a Dunbar Avenue, Streatham, SW16

All of these nurseries have given me very positive feedback on their training experiences with me and have also fully embraced signing with the children in their care.

Our Sing and Sign Nursery Affiliation Programme is effective, efficient, good value for money and highly regarded by the nurseries that I have visited; one member of staff rushed up to me on my return visit to tell me that "Your training was the best we've ever had" - and this was from an OFSTED Outstanding Nursery.

Please do contact me if you'd like to include your Nursery Setting in the Sing and Sign Nursery Affiliation Programme. I will inspire your staff to become proficient signers - and you, your staff, your parents and most importantly, the children entrusted to you will reap the benefits the early pre-verbal communication brings.

Do not hesitate to contact me through the "Make an Enquiry "button on the right of this page,  please.
