Top Tips

Here are some top tips for sucessful baby signing...

• Keep it simple – stick to signing one key word in any sentence. This helps your baby pick out the important part of what you are saying and stops your speech from becoming stilted. It’s important for your baby to hear the lilt and rhythm of normal speech.
• Never sign in silence – always say the word as you are signing so that your baby hears the word too.
• Accept any signing attempts happily – your child’s first attempts at signing may be a vague approximation of the sign. Give them plenty of praise and enthusiasm but make sure you continue to use the ‘proper’ sign rather than adopting their version!
• Be consistent – try to remember to use your signs at any opportunity you can, the more you use them the more likely your child will make the connection between the word and sign and eventually have a go too.
• Stick with it! – if your wee one is not signing yet, don’t lose heart! Many children don’t start to use signs until well after their first birthday but the benefits of your signing will be happening long before this. Your signs can help their understanding and attention and of course the added visual cues help strengthen all the growing connections in those amazing wee brains.

Happy signing!
